PLEASURABLE PAINTING IN PROVENCE

LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP with Tjasa Iris

Historical notes about Van Gogh in Provence

VAN GOGH AT ARLES

Vincent Van Gogh arrived to Arles on Monday 20 February, with the aim to found "L'atelier du Midi" (atelier of the South), a home for artists, that could there study the magic luminous light of the South. He was then 35 years old. He had just approached Japanese painting. Arles was suggested to him by Toulouse-Lautrec.

VAN GOGH AT SAINT REMY

Van Gogh came to Saint Remy de Provence on 8th May 1889. He lived at hospital Saint Paul de Mausole. His work from this period is most extraordinary. He produced 150 paintings and drawings.
Vincent Van Gogh asked Theo, his brother to give him on his disposition two rooms, one toward the garden and the hills of des Alpilles. He painted numerous landscapes, he was very attracted by cypresses.

On 16st May 1890 Van Gogh leaves Saint Remy de Provence for Auvers sur Oise.

Landscape painting workshop. We will be painting on the paths around  places that Van Gogh loved to paint most in the last years of his life.
Strong emphasis on color theory. Slides of contemporary and modern art will be shown each evening with emphasis on Van Gogh’s paintings.

We will gather each morning and live for our painting locations. Four days will be completely dedicated to the work of Vincent Van Gogh and his presence at Arles and Saint Remy. We will visit the  places where he painted his most beautiful paintings during his stay in Provence. Two days of our painting holidays will be dedicated to magic blue-violet lavender fields,  for those who will join us in July or red poppies for those who will join us in May,  that are going to be flourishing in that precise moment of the year. We will also visit historical villages, castles, wine farms with their spectacular gardens and landscape.

Tjasa will also introduce you to wine of the area and take you to local wine tastings.

The nature in this places didn't change much since Van Gogh was painting there. It remained green, savage, magnificly preserved. It remained a harbor of peace. You will discover it while walking and painting along it's paths of light perfume and luminous sun of the "Midi".

Emphasis will be put on perception and observation, as the bases to painting. I will help you develop your personal outlook, as well as inspire your imagination in all this magical places and to help you appreciate art to the full. We will paint 4 hours every morning.
You may work on sketches for the first few days, and than proceed to more accomplished works derived from these last. Or you may simply paint two or three works a day. If for some reason, you want to wonder and explore the territory during  these days, you are pleased to do so.
We will meet again in the evening, discuss the work done during the day and see numerous slides of contemporary and modern art.
